The Frozen Throne manual is the CD booklet that was included with the original expansion release, and provides a brief chronicle of the events leading to the new campaigns, as well as explanation of the new units and features. A convenient Hot Keys reference is also provided, on the back cover. At the end, a few pages are dedicated to the World Editor, but that section seems incomplete.

The downside is that it is black-and-white, while the PDF is in color. It has all the contents of the PDF, preceded by a proper documentation of the game’s interface, and a more technical description of the units, buildings and spells. Interestingly, the Reign of Chaos manual booklet is longer and more extensive than the PDF version that you can find on the CD or on Blizzard’s FTP mirror.

The manuals for both the original and the expansion are included in the box. If you download such a backup, you will need to enter your CD key once to play the game, and may need to disable auto-updates, to prevent the game from accidentally installing Reforged over itself. The advantage over the stand-alone 1.27b, is unification of Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne to a single executable (switchable in the main menu, without exiting the game) and proper widescreen support.
If you are fine with playing single-player or LAN only (no ), there ways to obtain the latest pre- Reforged version (1.31.1), basically from a backup some user made. It also has much higher system requirements. So what is the problem? Well, for starts, Reforged is a ~27GB installation – more than ten times the size of the classic games. If you link your RoC/TFT CD keys to your account, you will be offered Reforged at no cost, except it will be locked to the classic graphics, not the remastered ones (you do get the upgraded cinematics).

Moreover, Reforged (at patch level 1.32.10 at the time of this writing) is the only version you can play on with. Versions beyond that were only ever offered digitally, through the Blizzard launcher, and are no longer available on – all you can get is Warcraft III: Reforged. At minimum, I recommend the latest stand-alone patch, 1.27b. It is advised to upgrade the games, post-install, beyond 1.21b, since it eliminates the CD check. The discs include the initial versions ( Reign of Chaos v1.00 and The Frozen Throne v1.07) and are are SecuROM protected, so some of the more advanced cloning tools may be required to make a 1:1 backup copy.

Both CD keys are on the jewel case, and you may want to copy them somewhere safe, since they are required to install the games (even if you never play online). The front insert says “Warcraft Battle Chest” and has Reign of Chaos artwork, the rear insert has the The Frozen Throne artwork.
Note:The disks are compatible with Windows and Macintosh, but I was only able to test the Windows versions.Įach game comes on its own CD, but instead of individual jewel cases, Blizzard opted for a single 2-CD case.
